Stirling Moss Tribute

StirlingMossPicAs you will no doubt be aware Sir Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90. What you may not know is the he was a Vice President of MMKMC for many years. He was a great friend of the late David Haynes whose company is still to this day one of our main sponsors.

Stirling Moss was an Honorary Member in 1962. On the 1961 Dinner & Dance Menu he was listed as a Vice President. From the "original" letters we have he agreed to continue as a Vice President in 1968 - copy below - [we have no record of when he was first appointed a VP] but we have his continuing acceptance of the appointment for the years 1969 to 1972 and a resignation letter in 1994 so he appears to have been a VP for over 33 years. He was a guest at our 1971 Dinner & Dance [and possibly at the John Jensen organized D & D in 1980]. In 1964 he was the star at the MMKMC Questions and Film show at the Municipal Theatre in Maidstone. He also competed in the Club’s Sporting Trials.

Those of us of a certain age grew up with Stirling as one of the Greats of British motor racing. A very talented driver who could turn his hand to driving just about any type of car in any discipline. He came from a talented family as his sister Pat was also a well respected rally driver in her time. She also married Eric Carlson yet another well known SAAB rally driver. For me Stirling Moss was part of the language of motoring as anybody who was accused by the Police, or anybody else for that matter, of driving too fast you always got the retort "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, STIRLING MOSS?" Keep well everybody. Regards, Bruce

COVID-19 virus

In light of the UK Government guidelines on the COVID-19 pandemic, Motorsport UK has updated its guidance as to the implications of the outbreak in relation to motorsport. Based on the World Health Organisation’s declaration that this is a public health emergency of international concern, the UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the UK to high.

The Directors of the Maidstone and Mid-Kent Motor Club are mindful of the implications of possible harmful effects on our Members and Competitors that could result from meetings and events organised by the Club. We have therefore decided to suspend all Club activities involving face-to-face contact until further notice. However we do want to keep in contact with you all and would encourage you to use our website and Facebook pages for communication, future updates on the situation and to see when we can return to normal Club activities.

If you wish to contact the committee we have an email address you are welcome to use and we will, of course, be able to speak to each other by telephone.

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Competitors entered in the Tyrwhitt Drake Car Trial that was due to take place on Sunday 29th March will have their entry fees fully refunded.

New RS Clubman Licence

We want to let you know that from January 2020, Motorsport UK will be introducing a requirement for ALL COMPETITORS in Motorsport UK permitted events to hold a Motorsport UK competition licence this is in addition to your club membershipThis will be at a minimum, a new RS Clubman licence. This applies to new competitors as well as to anyone previously competing solely with a club membership card. The good news is that this entry-level, RS Clubman licence, will now be free.

This initiative is being introduced by Motorsport UK to encourage participation at grass roots level as well as to ensure that all competitors are covered by comprehensive public liability and personal accident insurance. It replaces the Non-Race Clubman licence, (which in 2019 cost £29). All licence holders will have access to the Member Benefits Programme which provides substantial discounts on well-known brands, products, services, and can contribute to offsetting the cost of competing.

If you have not previously held a Competition licence or not renewed in 2019, it will also be a requirement to apply for a new RS Clubman licence in order to compete or be a passenger in Club events. This is free of charge and applicable to Autotests, Trials, Cross Country and Road Rallying including 12 Cars and Scatters.

Please note: an RS Clubman licence is not required if you are already in possession of a current 2019 Competition licence.

You can apply for a FREE RS Clubman licence from the Motorsport UK website - Click here

The other major change is that the cost of event permits has been increased to cover the increased cost of insurance for events and provide additional income for our governing body. An across the board increase of £5.00 has been applied to permits, so we have to inform you that the Club will have no option but to add the sum to all our event entry fees from January 2020.

We will keep you informed of any further developments in due course.

We look forward to your continued support and both as a club member and as a competitor and wish you a safe and enjoyable year of motor sport in 2020.

Regards,
MMKMC Club Directors
